Mayor leads baguio delegation to three sister city events abroad

BAGUIO CITY – Mayor Mauricio Domogan will lead the city's delegation to three important sister city events abroad from Oct. 18 to Nov. 6.

The mayor flew to Hangzhou, China last Oct. 11 to attend the Hangzhou International Sister City Mayors' Conference on City and Innovation 2017 upon invitation of Hangzhou Mayor Xu Liyi.

The conference which ran from Oct. 18-22 featured a forum on city and innovation and signing ceremonies on innovation initiative, friendship city agreement and sister city forest planting with panel discussions on electronic commerce, smart city and culture and branding.

Occupants from the 50 illegal structures at the BIBAK compound demolished by the city government and line agencies concerned hastily save belongings and other useful materials to relocate. NCIP-CARB anounced that an eight-storey cultural center and museum is expected to rise and the Benguet-Ifugao-Bontoc-Apayao Kalinga (BIBAK) dormitory is still being deliberated upon to accommodate the lodging needs of Cordilleran students. - By Bong Cayabyab

RDC-CAR cites gains on renewed quest for autonomy.

BAGUIO CITY October 19 – The Cordillera Regional Development Council (RDC-CAR) cited the initial gains and advances that were achieved over the past several years in relation to the region's renewed quest for autonomy.

RDC-CAR Secretary and Assistant Regional Director of the Cordillera office of the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA-CAR) Jedidia Aquino underscored that aside from being able to bring to the attention of President Rodrigo R. Duterte the snowballing clamor for regional autonomy by concerned stakeholders, Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Jesus G. Dureza has vowed to champion House Bill (HB) 5343, or the bill that seeks to establish an autonomous region in the Cordillera by simultaneously working it out with the enactment of the Bangsamoro Basic Law.

Firm committed to maintain partnership for WTE facility

BAGUIO CITY October 17 – Benguet Corporation remains firm to maintain its partnership with the local governments of Itogon and Baguio City for the development of an integrated solid management system within portions of its Antamok open-pit site in Itogon town.

In his letter to Mayor Mauricio G. Domogan, BC Executive Director Isidro C. Alcantara, Jr. underscored the company's awareness of the serious waste disposal issues that need to be addressed by both local governments for the benefit of the people.

Buguias town gets initial support in hydro project agreement

Buguias, the landslide-prone vegetable producing town in Benguet will soon have a payloader for its road-clearing operations, thanks to a joint agreement with the Benguet Electric Cooperative (Beneco) for the construction of a three megawatt hydroelectric plant in the town.

The Beneco board headed by president Rocky Aliping recently adopted a recommendation of general manager Gerardo Verzosa for the purchase of heavy equipment for the vegetable-producing town.

New ordinance on blood donation program sought

BAGUIO CITY – A new ordinance establishing a voluntary blood donation program in the city is needed to repeal the existing inoperative one.

This was the recommendation of the city council research division under local legislative staff officer V Dan Ricky Ong in the report submitted to Vice Mayor Edison Bilog Oct. 3.

The report was based on the legislative monitoring and evaluation done on Ordinance No. 54 series of 1992 "Establishing a pool of possible blood donors in all barangays in the city and appropriating funds therefor" and Resolution No. 342 series of 2011 "Enjoining barangays of the (city) to encourage and seek possible blood donors within their barangays and to create list of possible donors to serve as database in their barangays..."

Deputation of brgy officials to enforce anti-smoking law eyed

BAGUIO CITY – Members of the Smoke-Free Baguio Task Force chaired by Mayor Mauricio Domogan are mulling the deputation of barangay officials as enforcers of Ordinance No. 34 series of 2017 or the "Smoke-Free Baguio Ordinance."

Association of Barangay Councils president and Councilor Michael Lawana broached this during the task force's meeting recently saying one way to ensure full implementation of the ordinance is the engagement of the barangay officials who can enforce the same in their areas of jurisdiction.

City to fund put up of satellite markets

BAGUIO CITY October 19 – The local government will be funding the construction, upgrading and rehabilitation of satellite markets in the different parts of the city to help in efforts to decongest the influx of people to the city public market which is one of the major causes of monstrous traffic jams around the central business district area.

Mayor Mauricio G. Domogan said one of the priorities of the local government next year is for the upgrading and rehabilitation of existing satellite markets and the construction of other satellite markets in strategic areas in the different barangays of the city.

Committee to plan out BIBAK lot development

BAGUIO CITY October 19 – Mayor Mauricio G. Domogan said the inter-agency committee will plan out the desired development of the 5,000-square meter Benguet-Ifugao-Bontoc-Apayao-Kalinga (BIBAK) property along Harrison Road once the demolition of the illegal structures erected over portions of the government property shall have been completed.

The local chief executive claimed that he alone cannot decide what to do with the property because the committee is composed of representatives from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) who also have jurisdiction over the property. Whatever projects that will be implemented within the property will be a collective decision of the inter-agency committee.

BAGUIO CITY – The city government will fete 12 outstanding senior citizens in ceremonies led by the office of the city social welfare and development office in partnership with the senior citizens organizations on Oct. 25, 1p.m. at the Baguio Convention Center.
