Artist in g-string wins big in Europe with 'kailian' support

Cordillera gongs pealed last week-end in Switzerland to celebrate an Igorot artist's winning twin top honors for his stone carving of an old man beating a gong at the 10th International Sculpture Symposium in Morges town by Lake Geneva.

Woodcarver-turned driftwood and river stone sculptor Gilbert Gano Alberto, the only Asian and smallest artist among 30 from 20 countries, stood tall as he received the Prix du Public (Audience Choice) plum and annexed the silver in the Prix du Jury (Jury Prize), becoming the only double winner in the prestigious event.

"The sound of the gangsa (gong) echoed through the alps and lakes to thank Kabunian (the Almighty) for the recognition to a humble but talented "kailian" (compatriot)," recalled expatriate Lolita Hafner.

But mayor Mauricio Domogan did a "Noah" last week expressing worries as to the use, management and economic viability of the Baguio Convention Center (BCC) even as the City Government is scrounging for ways to save ownership and possession over it.

During a presser hosted by DZEQ Radio ng Bayan, he quipped the city government will be looking into the possible privatization of the city's lone convention venue.

He said, "We will definitely look into the possibility of partnering with a private group," revealing the Hotels and Restaurants Association of Baguio's (HRAB) interest in taking over management over the city's real asset.
