Fianza proposes sports council

City councilor Peter Fianza has proposed the establishment of a Baguio Sports Promotion and Development Council to serve as advisory body to give direction to the city's sports programs.

In a proposed ordinance, Fianza recommended tapping sector representatives to compose the council which is also envisioned to recommend sports policies, plans and activities and monitor implementation of the same .

Fianza noted that despite the conduct of a sports summit in 2004 for the finalization of the city's sports development program, the city still has to create such council to address the need for a holistic view and approach to sports development.

He recalled that in 2009, a proposed ordinance adopting a sports development code for the city was introduced "and pending action before the Sangguniang Panlungsod".

Lately, he said, "Administrative Order No. 95, Series of 2011 was issued by the City Mayor creating a technical working committee to draft and formulate the city sports code".

An advisory council will have to be created to collate and look into all proposed actions, not only for representation but also for possible immediate implementation, Fianza added.

He recommended that the council be composed of not more than 25 members from the city sports development office, the city schools division, the Baguio Correspondents and Broadcasters Club, coach/trainer in combat and non-combat spots, representatives of athletes' organizations, umpires and referees, the city council, Sanggunian and barangay federation chairs, sports coordinators of the private and public elementary and high schools, schools' athletic manager, business, medical practitioners and managers of sports facilities
