Statistics month's focus on tourism dev't to benefit baguio – alibuyog

BAGUIO – The National Statistics Month celebration's focus on the tourism industry will benefit Baguio City, being a tourist destination and now an internationally-recognized Creative City, National Statistics Office Cordillera Regional Director Villafe Alibuyog said on Monday.

Alibuyog led the launching of the Statistics Month celebration during the City Hall flag-raising ceremonies with city officials led by Mayor Mauricio Domogan and Vice Mayor Edison Bilog.

She said the celebration's theme this year, "Exploring Philippine Numbers in Wonders: Statistics towards Sustainable Tourism Development" aims to highlight the contribution of the tourism sector in economic growth and in nation-building, it being one of the economic drivers of the country.

"The theme reflects the relevance of statistics in achieving a sustainable progressive tourism growth for our country and emphasizes the need for statistics to identify potential tourism havens and areas that require intervention," Alibuyog said.

She said the theme poses significance to the Cordillera region of which flora and fauna continues to attract tourists and to the city "being the gateway to the existing and still flourishing community-based tourism sites in other areas of the Cordillera which has launched itself as a Creative City in February 2018 under the United Nations Creative Cities Network.

She said the Creative City status is a boon to the local tourism development as it will boost the creative industries unique in the city and the whole region.

"Since the industry contributes significantly to the economy, there is a need to obtain reliable statistics on tourism in order to come up with feasible and appropriate programs and policies that will further lead to its sustainable development," she said.

"These statistics will help policymakers address challenges in the sector," she added.

She said that based on the Philippine Tourism Satellite Accounts compiled by the PSA, the industry contributed 12.2 percent to the Philippine economy in 2017 which is 24.2 percent higher than that of 2016.

About 5.3 million people were employed in the tourism industry in 2017.

"The availability of these statistics for the people in public service has implication in our wise use of them in making sound policies and decisions," she said.

Among the activities lined up for the celebration are the Infographics Exhibit at the City Hall lobby, Orientation Seminar on Tourism Satellite Accounts on Oct. 19 8 a.m. to 12 noon at the PSA-CAR regional office and the Banaue Rice Terraces Restoration Drive on Oct. 16 by the Regional Statistics Committee. – Aileen P.
