Batang pinoy heroes to get incentives

BAGUIO CITY – Athletes instrumental to the retention of the city's Batang Pinoy National Championship title stand to receive cash incentives from the city government.

A simple tribute is also being prepared for the close to 300 medalists responsible for the city's unofficial 85 gold, 81 silver and 104 bronze medal haul and eventually the landslide victory over closest rival Cebu City with 37-40-44; Laguna Province, 33-13-31; Quezon City, 32-17-17; and Pangasinan, 22-21-21.

As per the city's Baguio-based Athletes and Coaches Incentives and Benefits Ordinance," the athletes and their coaches will receive P10,000 for gold medals, P5,000 for silver and P3,000 for bronze.

Mayor Mauricio Domogan said the city's athletes excelled in combative sports which contributed most of the medals in the sports competition, the first national sports event to be hosted by the city last Sept. 17-21.

"We are proud of you our athletes for giving honor to our city and to all other athletes nationwide who participated in the sports event for giving your best despite the inconvenience brought by typhoon "Ompong," the mayor said.

More than 2,000 competitors from various localities in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao were marooned in the school classrooms that served as their billeting centers when "Ompong" battered the city and the Cordillera region last Sept. 15 but the city government through its city sports development office under Gaudencio Gonzales and Paul Rillorta, the city social welfare development under OCSWD Officer Betty Fangasan and others including private donors ensured their safety and convenience during the howler's onslaught.

Indeed, combative sports like arnis, wushu, muay thai and taekwondo served as the city's gold mine with outputs of 18, 13, 11 and 10 gold medals respectively and most of the silver and bronze awards. Judo and wrestling also contributed eight gold medals apiece.
