City to pilot test solar power in facilities

BAGUIO CITY July 25 - Mayor Mauricio G. Domogan announced to energy stakeholders that the local government will be pilot testing solar power panels in its various structures and facilities as part of efforts to lessen government expenses on power consumption.

Speaking before the 3-dy Seminar-Worksop in Mainstreaming Energy efficiency and Conservation to Local Government Units spearheaded by the energy department here, Domogan revealed that the local government is on the process of bidding out a P33 million solar power project purposely to install solar power panels within the city-owned swimming pool area to help heat up the pool for trainings and various local, national, regional and international sports competitions.

Further, he added that the roofing of the proposed 8-storey government structure that is being planned to be constructed in the vacant lot near the Baguio fire department to serve as a multi-level parking facility for government vehicles and to accommodate other government offices will be made up of solar power panels so that it will contribute in reducing the local government's expenditure on power consumption with the local power distributor.

"We want to pilot test solar power in the local government structures so that people will be convinced to also embrace the use of renewable energy not only for their own consumption but also for the needs of their businesses to help the government in empower the people to patronize the use of renewable energy which is considered to be environmentally-friendly," Domogan stressed.

The local chief executive admitted that the installation of solar power panels to maximize the heat of the sun to produce power is expensive but there is a need for the local government to show the way in the realization of a successful solar power project to help convince more people to embrace the idea of shifting to the use of solar power to lessen personal and corporate expenditures on power consumption.

According to him, the installation of solar power in the swimming pool area to help heat up the city's Olympic-sized swimming pool had been subjected to studies by various proponents of the solar power project that is why local officials remain optimistic on the success of the project once it will be awarded to the winning bidder.

He claimed plans for the put up of the 8-storey structure in the vacant lot near the Baguio fire department will incorporate the putting in place of solar power panels in the roofing so that it will be able to maximize the potentials of the rays of the sun to produce power for the offices that will be located within it to help in efforts by the local government to save on power cost and serve as a showcase of a successful solar power project right at the heart of the city.

Renewable energy experts are advocating for the use of alternative sources of power for their energy requirements and lessen their dependence on fossil fuel because of its perceived harmful effects to the state of the environment unlike in renewable energy where the available resources need to be tapped to reduce the expensive cost of power and embrace environmental-friendly power sources. Domogan said the local government supports the aggressive campaign of the energy department in empowering residents in the countryside to maximize the utilization of renewable sources of power in their places for energy efficient consumption among other purposes.
