Baguio is doing well in Tourism, Sports and Disaster Response:

BAGUIO CITY-The city has fared well in the field of sports, tourism the promotion of world sisterhood and friendships, and disaster risk reduction management with the support of the citizenry.

This was reported by City Administrator Atty. Carlos Canilao during the regular flag raising ceremonies at city hall last week.

In September this year, Canilao said, the city hosts the Batang Pinoy National Championship expecting 4000 to 5000 athletes in different sports. Other notable sporting events have been hosted lately such as the Le Tour de Filipinos, PSC Manny Pacquiao Amateur Boxing Cup Luzon Finals, and Phil Superliga Volleyball Tour, Canilao added.

The sisterhood activities between Baguio and cities around the world have been strengthened; through student and employee exchange programs with Taebaek, South Korea; the building of Thailand elephants marker at the Botanical garden sister city park; the accommodation of local and foreign sister cities during the Panagbenga festival, and delegations sent to the sister city festivals.

This is in addition to special events and activities spearheaded by the City Tourism office under the City Administrator's Office, including the New years celebration, Chinese New Year, Summer Vacation in Baguio, Araw ng Kagitingan, Liberation Day, Flag Day, and Independence Day.

Added to these are assistance extended to 53 lakbay-aral in 2017; and 18 for the first quarter of 2018; all from different cities and municipalities in the country.

In Oct. 2017 the city was declared as one of UNESCO's creative cities thru the efforts of the city tourism office, Department of Tourism (DOT-CAR), the academe and non-government organizations (NGOs).

The city was also awarded a plaque of exemplary performance in the adoption and implementation of standard local tourism statistic system, in line with National Statistics Month, early this year.

It was on this note that Canilao appealed for the strengthening of the tourism office through physical and human resources. We need a tourism department to look after these activities, after all tourism is the city's main industry, he added.

For the commemoration of July as National Disaster Resiliency Month, Canilao also reported that relevant activities have been prepared by personnel of the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office

Earlier, the new Disaster Operation Center with evacuation center facility at the city engineers office, city camp has been inaugurated.

Last April, the city was awarded a plaque of appreciation during the UNWFP Disaster Preparedness and Response Project Completion at Dusit Thani Hotel in Manila. This was the result of Baguio's 2014 Memorandum of Understanding with the United Nations World Food Program granting the city P2.6M to "make our city prepared to respond and to act on disaster providing capacities and capabilities for more resilient communities and to strengthen the CDRRM system."

CDRRMO personnel are now better trained after at least trainings and seminars, and sought after trainors for other areas.

Canilao also reported on the CDRRMO Operation Center's accomplishments since July 2017: received and coordinated 1,541 incoming calls; responded to 658 emergency cases, coordinated and conducted 10 simulation exercises/drills; monitored and participated in 63 city wide events; rendered 37 medical standbys; and monitored the 17 typhoons that entered the Philippine Areas of Responsibility and 5 earthquakes felt in the city

In his report, Canilao reminded the public about disaster preparedness, specially with the commemoration of the July 16, 1990 earthquake. ***.-juliegfianza with reports from the City Administrator's Office.
