DOST – CAR introduces modern technology in gong-making

BAGUIO CITY - The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Cordillera has introduced modern technology in gong-fabrication in Benguet, specifically in Bedbed, Mankayan.

According to Dr. Arnold Inumpa, the Director of the Provincial Science and Technology in Benguet, this project is a way to preserve the culture of gong-making in the Cordilleras. Moreover, it encourages the youth to learn the process of making gongs since it is currently being practiced by the elderlies in the community. Therefore, the introduction of modern technology ensures the sustainability of gong-production in the country.

Inumpa said that the project started in February this year and that the building for gong fabrication is already complete. He added that the fabrication machines and equipment are expected to be delivered this month. Further, the project was financed by DOST – CAR and is currently being implemented by the Metal Industry Research and Development Center (MIRDC). The project is also in partnership with the local government unit of Mankayan and headed by an organization of gong makers which is composed mostly of senior citizens in barangay Bedbed, Mankayan.

Inumpa emphasized that the machines will only facilitate the production of gongs, but the latter will be hammered manually so as not to sacrifice the sound quality of the gong. "We still have to stick to the quality based on traditional standards," he said.

Dr. Nancy Bantog, the DOST – CAR Regional Director, said that while the project is "a marriage of technology and Cordillera culture", the sound of the gongs is still the primary consideration. She added that the machines and equipment will only form and shape the gongs but the rest, especially the manual fine-tuning, will be handled by the gong maker.*** Mekyla Rose Forbes (PIO-CMO)
