Baguio ploggers get kudos for earth day contributions

BAGUIO CITY – Members of the Baguio Ploggers, a group of environmental advocates and fitness enthusiasts who practice plogging as a means of environmental stewardship, received kudos from the City Government via Resolution No. 149 series of 2018 citing their contributions to the environment during the Earth Day celebration last April 22.

"... During the commemoration of the Earth Day 2018, the Baguio Ploggers in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Environmental Management Bureau- Cordillera Administrative Region held a successful plogging activity in Burnham Park which was joined by young and old alike ages from 7 to 61 years old, students, professionals, leisure walkers, and running enthusiasts," the resolution jointly introduced and adopted by the City Council and approved by Mayor Mauricio Domogan noted.

"Such initiative of Ms. Stephanie Abnasan and the Baguio Ploggers is worthy of emulation by the city residents especially the youth for its countless benefits not only in maintaining a healthy body and mind but also in a clean environment, its admirable impact to the Earth Day 2018 celebration, and for supporting the call to end plastic pollution."

According to the resolution, Abnasan is a full-time medical intern at the SLU Hospital of Sacred Heart and running enthusiast who initiated or organized the first recorded plogging event in the City through a Facebook post which was eventually joined by 10 other runners.

The ploggers collected six bags of trash within an hour of plogging while taking the routes of Panagbenga Park, Military Cut-off, South Drive and Loakan Drive.

Plogging is said to be an exercise that originated in Scandanavia, the word rooted from the Swedish words "ploccka up" which is to pick up and "joggning" which means jogging.

"It is a fitness trend that involves picking up litter while jogging that caught quickly in Europe with hundreds of athletes joining the cause," the resolution said. – Aileen P. Refuerzo
