Biz firms told to tighten security measures

BAGUIO CITY – Mayor Mauricio Domogan ratified a city council ordinance requiring owners or operators of hotels, malls, supermarkets, amusement centers, tourist spots and other establishments or areas where the public converge to adopt tighter security measures through the installation of closed-circuit televisions, use of metal detectors, and the like.

Authored by Vice Mayor Edison Bilog and aldermen Leandro Yangot Jr. and Joel Alangsab, ordinance number 49 series of 2018 states that the move will ensure the safety of the public.

"Incidences of violence in public are becoming more and more common. It seems that everyday shootings or terrorist attacks hit the news. Places involved in these crimes involve malls, supermarkets and other public places," the measure states.

The ordinance directs the city buildings and architecture office (CBAO) in coordination with the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO), public order and safety division (POSD) and permits and licensing division, both under the City Mayor's Office, to ensure its implementation or enforcement.

It tasks the CBAO in coordination with the BCPO and POSD to conduct regular ocular inspections to ensure that owners or operators of establishments have complied with the measure's requirements.

Should the owners , operators or persons-in-charge want training pertaining to the security measures or frameworks as provided in the ordinance, the BCPO and POSD shall provide this to the establishment's personnel or security force.

Any operator, owner or person-in-charge found violating the ordinance shall be fined P3,000 for the first offense; P4,000, second offense; P5,000 for the third offense and cancellation of permits.-gaby keith
