Unopposed barangay officials to be granted incentives

BAGUIO CITY May 02 - The City Council approved on first reading a proposed ordinance granting a one-time cash incentive amounting to P25,000 and a plaque of recognition for all unopposed Punong Barangays who are aspiring for re-election in the upcoming May 14, 2018 synchronized barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections.

The ordinance authored by Councilor Leandro B. Yangot, Jr. stated that all Punong Barangays who are unopposed in the upcoming May 14, 2018 synchronized barangay and SK elections shall be granted the mandatory cash incentive of P25,000 which will be drawn from whatever available funds of the local government.

Under the proposed ordinance, the cash incentive and the accompanying plaque of recognition shall be awarded by the local government during the 2018 Baguio Charter Day celebration on September 1, 2018.

The ordinance tasked the Special Services Division under the City Mayor's Office, in coordination with the Liga ng mga Barangay, to ensure the successful implementation of the local legislative measure.

Yangot underscored the success of barangay governance lies with the outstanding performance of its local leaders from the Punong Barangay down to the appointed barangay officials as well as the barangay volunteers who render uncompromising services for the upliftment of the status of their barangays and the living condition of their constituents.

The ordinance added the Punong Barangay, being the chief executive of the local government unit, plays a vital role especially in decision-making and in ensuring the successful implementation of the various programs, projects and activities in their areas of jurisdiction.

According to the proposal, proof of outstanding performance for those Punong Barangay who have shown exemplary performance in the discharge of their respective duties and responsibilities, is their election to office without any contender, showing they still enjoy the trust and confidence of their constituents.

In the city, Yangot revealed that there are 17 Punong Barangay who are unopposed in their re-election bid for the May 14, 2018 election.

Yangot emphasized being elected into office without any opponent only proves that barangay leaders, like the unopposed Punong Barangay, were able to win the trust and confidence of their constituents, therefore, it is but appropriate for the local government to give them due recognition to further boost their morale and further improve the delivery of services to their constituents and implement the priority development projects beneficial to the growth and development of their barangays.

The city's unopposed Punong Barangays are Wilbert Ponce of Andres Bonifacio, Maria Teresa Valera of North Central Aurora Hill, Melvin A. Cortes of Bayan Park Village, Jeanette Liwas Floresca of Camdas, Joel A. Omar of Campo Filipino, George Chapuyen Fangroy of Cresencia Village, Michael L.
