Law for more benefits for retired jurists signed

President Gloria Macapagal signed into law last Wednesday January 13 a law that would grant additional retirement, survivorship and other benefits to members of the judiciary.

The law that amends RA 910 is co-authored by Congressman Mauricio G. Domogan along with 20 other congressmen. The signing of the legislative measure came after the recent demise of two local retired Regional Trial Court judges, George C. Macli-ing and Valentine A. Marasigan. The two had been lobbying Congressman Domogan for the passage of the bill.

Congressman Domogan in a statement said that the signing of the amendatory law that would grant additional benefits to the surviving retirees and their beneficiaries would be a good tribute to the two judges who just passed away.

The law covers all the retired justices of the Supreme Court, the Court of Appeals Sandiganbayan and judges of all the lower courts who had served for at least 15 years. He/She shall receive during the residue of his natural life, the salary or the highest RATA (Representation and Transportation Allowance) which he/she had been receiving at the time of retirement or resignation. Apart from which are non-wage benefits in the form of full scholarship to one legitimate child in any of the state colleges and universities. A member of the judiciary who for other reasons retire or resign shall be entitled to a pro-rata monthly pension, basic pay plus the highest RATA.
