Kafagway-CAR sports international luminaries award and recognition rites set

BAGUIO CITY – The Kafagway sports international luminaries award and recognition program (KSILARP) will be held at the Silungan Center of the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), Upper Session road on February 10. Athlete Stephen Loman and sportsman-coach Marques Sangiao will lead the core of awardees from the city and other parts of the Cordillera region.

Loman, a student from the University of the Cordilleras (UC) last November won the inaugural world bantamweight title in the Brave Combat Federation with a first round knock-out against Indian National Gurdarshan Mangat at the Khalifa Sports City in Bahrain. For his exemplary achievement, he will receive the prestigious NCCB Kafagway Sports "Super Athlete of the Year 2017" trophy. On the other hand, veteran sportsman-coach Sangiao who was recently named as the No. 2 Most outstanding MMA Coach in Asia, will receive the "Super Coach of the year 2017" trophy. He is the founder of Team Lakay, the mother sports organization of former ONE World Lightweight Champion Edward Folayang and other outstanding MMA warriors from the Cordillera. Sangiao is a veteran world and Southeast Asian Games gold medalist and is also a wushu coach at UC.

Presentors of the main awards are Mayor Mauricio Domogan, Vice-Mayor Edison Bilog, City Councilors Faustino Olowan and Benny Bomogao. Baguio Balikbayan Jossie Delinila from the executive committee of the Silahis ng Pasko sa Baguio is the major award presentor for the womens' most outstanding international and national athletes. The Sportsmen and athletes' medal of honor hopefully will be sponsored by the Filipino Japanese Foundation of Northern Luzon, Inc. headed by Director Arnel Cabanisas.

Other honorees from at least 15 sports discipline are senior citizen National Team track and field member Erlinda Lavandia, Divine Wally for Wushu, Kareel Meer Hongitan, Archery; Sandi Menchi Abahan, Ultra-marathon (W); car racer Carlos Anton and son Inigo; MMA warriors Kevin Belingon and Honorio Banario; Islay Erika Benito and Mariah Trenyce, Muay Thai; boxers Carl James Martin and KJ Natuplag; PWD Agustina Dumampog Ancheta and girls' division chess champions Bea Mendoza and Samantha Glo Revita, among others. Names of other awardees are still undergoing the screening process. The final roll of honor of awardees will be known and announced next week.

Officers of the KSILARP are Harley Palangchao, Editor of the Baguio Midland Courier; Roderick Osis Editor of Sunstar Baguio; Edong Carta, President of the Cordillera Broadcasters Alliance, Dobie de Guzman, anchor, ABS CBN TV Patrol Northern Luzon, mediaman Pigeon Lobien and veteran journalist Narciso Padilla. – Julie Fianza
