Tourists encouraged to leave cars in accommodation sites

BAGUIO CITY – Tourists will be encouraged to leave their cars in their accommodation sites or in any designated parking areas and instead take public transport while sightseeing around the city.

Mayor Mauricio Domogan signed City Council Resolution No. 400-17 requesting the owners and managers of hotels, inns, condominiums and transient houses in the city to take the lead in this advocacy by conspicuously displaying in their premises an advisory for their guests to leave their vehicles and make use of public utility vehicles in touring the city.

The measure aims to help ease the traffic problem by cutting down the volume of vehicles plying the streets.

It was an offshoot of the body's recent dialogue with acting city engineer Edgar Olpindo and Baguio City Police traffic management branch representative P/CInsp. Denver Guzman on the newly creation division in charge of traffic in the City Engineering Office and other traffic concerns.

"During the deliberations, various scenarios were presented affecting the traffic situation in the city such as overflowing of vehicles due to the influx of tourists, violations of the city's traffic ordinances due to limited parking spaces, narrow roads, jam-packing of vehicles along parks and restaurants and lack of traffic signs or road signs among others," the resolution noted.

"To help ease the traffic problem in the city, it is timely to (enlist the assistance of the owners of the various accommodations and the tourists as well)."

Councilor Benny Bomogao, chair of the council committee on public utilities, transportation and traffic legislation moved for the measure. – Aileen P. Refuerzo
