Baguio is 1st year CROWN awardee

BAGUIO CITY - Being one of the contender for the National Nutrition Award, the city of Baguio was recognized and awarded as the 1st year Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner on Nutrition (CROWN) in the city category.

The city of government here was feted last October 19 at the Hotel Supreme during the 2017 Regional Nutrition Awarding ceremony.

Secretary to the mayor Rafael Tallocoy and city health officer Dr. Rowena Galpo received the plaque of recognition.

The city of pines has been consistent in decrease stunning prevalence for the last three years.

Dr. Galpo stresses that Baguio, being an urban area, the leaders, program implementers and stakeholders are now facing the grave challenge of the unpredictable growth of the population in the city.

"However, with the organization of the Community Health Teams at the district health centers, the volunteers and barangay officials join the health staff in implementing community health services and outreach health projects in the concept of primary health care".

"While the Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) and Barangay Nutrition Action Officers (BNAOs) who are field workers are often sought to seek articular individuals and families for local and national projects such as Food and Nutrition Research Institute-Department of Science and Technology (FNRA-DOST) 2016 National Nutrition Survey and in identifying qualified residents for the expanded 4Ps program and other social projects of civic and people's organization like feeding programs and livelihood trainings," added Galpo.

Furthermore, nineteen barangays were recognized as barangays with zero prevalence of stunning 2016. Said barangays include Camp Subdivision, Lower Dagsian, Upper Dagsian, Fort Del Pilar, Lower General Luna, Upper General Luna, Happy Homes, Holy Ghost Proper, Magsaysay Private Road, Palma-Urbano, Phil-Am, Pinget, Upper QM, Middle Quezon Hill, Scout Barrio, South Drive, T. Alonzo, MRR-Queen of Peace and West Modernsite.

Accordingly, the National Nutrition Council established the Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation (MELLPI), a system for assessing efficiency and effectiveness of local nutrition program planning and implementation in 1979. Inter-agency nutrition evaluation teams at the provincial, regional and national levels conduct the MELLPI. In conjunction with MELLPI, the evaluation team also assesses the performance of BNS, the frontliners in the delivery of community level nutrition services. Both MELLPI and BNS evaluation are institutionalized activities of the National Nutrition Council, regional and local nutrition committees since 1979.

Tallocoy said, "the award will serve as an inspiration and motivation for the city to continue improving its activities and programs in combating malnutrition in the city of Baguio". *Jho Arranz
