Baguio day poster-making, quiz and speech contests set sept. 26

BAGUIO CITY – Students from the various public and private elementary and high schools will slug it out in three events in the Baguio Day school-based activities set Sept. 26 at the PFVR Gymnasium and the Department of Education conference room.

Councilor Peter Fianza who coordinates the school-based activities under the Baguio Day calendar said elementary pupils will compete in the giant poster or bookmark-making contest and quiz bee while the "madulang sabayang pagbigkas" or oral recitation will feature high school competing teams as coordinated by the city schools division under School Supt. Federico Martin.

Fianza said the school-based activities were made a regular feature of the charter day activities "to provide opportunity to reinforce the schoolchildren and students' culture, productivity and psychological well-being."

"Encouraging them to share responsibility through their creative ideas and information is an effective way of letting them realize their significance in making Baguio a vibrant city," Fianza said.

Though the contests, the city aims to create opportunities for the learners to reflect on both developmental successes and failure of the city and share responsibility for its continuous progress.

A total of six teams or 18 contestants are expected to join the giant bookmark-making contest while 12 teams or 24 contestants are projected for the quiz bee and five teams or 100 competitors for the oral recitation.

Cash prizes are at stake for the winners with the top three contestants to receive P6,000, P3,000 and P1,000 respectively in the bookmark-making contest; P4,000, P2,000 and P1,000 in the quiz bee; and P15,000, P10,000 and P5,000 plus P3,000 consolation prize in the oral recitation. – Aileen P.
