Mayor cites tourism gains in SOCA

BAGUIO CITY – "Tourism will continue to be a crucial driver in the city's economic growth."

This was stressed by Mayor Mauricio Domogan in his State of the City Address at city hall Monday as he pointed out that Baguio continuous to be among the top 14 destinations in the country.

The Summer Capital is also ranked 10 among the top 20 MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions) in the nation.

He said the city has recorded tourist arrivals of 1,136,360 in 2016 representing an increase of 1.89% as compared to those who visited in 2015.

The Mayor said Baguio remains a favorite destination so there is a need for a city tourism plan that is being crafted in collaboration with concerned stakeholders.

He added that with the raging push for autonomy in the region, the continuing BLISST (Baguio, La Trinidad, Itogon, Sablan, Tuba and Tublay) expansion and ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) integration coupled by our city's position in the global spotlight, "tremendous opportunities to advance our tourism development are certainly in the horizon."

"Our challenge is doing business and balancing commercial tourism without further compromising the city's environmental integrity," Domogan said.-gaby keith
