1st rondalla music camp held in baguio

BAGUIO CITY – Some 130 rondalla practitioners from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao have gathered in the city for the first-ever Rondalla Music Camp which will run from July 8-23 at the University of the Philippines Baguio.

The camp will offer an intensive training on the different aspects of rondalla performance which will include exposure to a new and challenging repertoire like symphonic and contemporary music, according to Dr. Ramon Santos, national artist for music who will serve as camp director.

Santos said the camp's ultimate aim is to professionalize the rondalla practice and uplift its status by developing the next generation of rondalla musicians who have the academic background and musical discipline and eventually to form the Philippine National Rondalla Orchestra.

"We have come to an age where rondalla playing is not only confined to folk music, accompanying folk dances, playing at airports and even for begging. We'd like to fix a higher status for rondalla where it is performed in high level functions as an art form that represents our identity as a nation," he said.

Joining the camp were 100 practitioners and 30 conductors from the various rondalla groups in the country who were pre-qualified as scholars for the training. They will be mentored by country's finest musicians and academicians.

The camp is organized by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) throught eh National Music Competitions for Young Artists (NAMCYA) and the Musicological Society of the Philippines (MSP) in partnership with the UP Baguio-Office of the Chancellor and the Office of Senator Loren Legarda.

Santos said Baguio City was selected as venue for the event because of its weather and location which are conducive to learning and to the achievement of the camp's objectives. – Aileen P. Refuerzo
