Mayor Mauricio G. Domogan remove the tapes of the muzzles and checks the Service Firearms of the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) personnel early morning of Monday January 2, 2012. The tape was put before the new year to ensure that no uniformed personnel will fire their service firearms indiscriminately and which based on the inspection of the mayor no one violated such.

Mayor denies hand in tree cutting permit

BAGUIO CITY – Mayor Mauricio Domogan Thursday denied having a hand in the issuance of permit allowing the cutting and balling of trees for the expansion project of SM City here.

The mayor said the authority to issue such permits lies with the Dept. of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and not with the city executive.

City rushes aide to S. Mindanao

BAGUIO CITY – Recalling the natural calamities which the city suffered during the past, Mayor Mauricio Domogan Monday announced the release of Four Hundred Thousand Pesos as aide to Southern Mindanao.

The aide in the form of cash was distributed to various Local Governments depending on the severity of the damage brought about by Typhoon Sendong.

Council pushes early bidding of public works projects

BAGUIO CITY – The city council wants national agencies to bid out public works projects early to allow the timely implementation of these projects and avoid creating problems in localities.

The body approved Vice Mayor Daniel Farinas' proposed resolution urging the Dept. of Public Works and Highways and the Dept. of Budget and Management to allow early bidding of public works projects included in the list of projects already funded under the approved national budget to ensure the projects' early implementation.

Anti-mendicancy drive nets 52

The city's anti-mendicancy drive netted last Tuesday evening 52 persons, all transients who were transported back to where they were earlier based.

Social welfare officer III Liza Balao of the city social welfare office said the round-up was done by the city's task force on anti-mendicancy, an inter-agen cy group composed of government and private sector representatives, including the Commision on Human Rights , the police, Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center, and bus companies plying the route to and from the city.

Officer Quintin Bugasto – from patrolman to colonel

Baguio has just lost one of its outstanding citizens. Former city police chief, Col. Quintin Madrid Bugasto died early last Sunday morning, five days after he was brought home from the hospital where he was confined for a lingering illness. He was 86.

"He remained alert 12 hours before he went," recalled his daughter Thelma at the wake.

Other police officers followed his example, but none will ever lay claim to the precedent set by Col. Bugasto in the history of the city police office. That was when the force was still dubbed – and aptly so - as Baguio's Finest, when its officers, men and women wore the smart blue uniform.

Barangays urged to establish human rights action center

BAGUIO CITY - Barangays here should establish their own human rights action center to empower them to take an active role in the protection and promotion of social justice and human rights.

The city council recently approved Resolution No. 371 series of 2011 authored by Councilors Edison Bilog, Joel Alangsab, Betty Lourdes tabanda and Karminn Cheryl Dinney Yangot for this purpose.

'Kalikasan' plea: MGD maintains no dumping of waste in Irisan

BAGUIO CITY – In the face of a petition seeking total abandonment and conversion of erstwhile Irisan garbage dumpsite into a green mound, mayor Mauricio Domogan last week maintained the area "is not and will not be the way it used to."

"I believe there is confusion here somewhere," he said adding, "There is no more dumping at Irisan."

Business permit renewals made "simpler"

BAGUIO CITY - Mayor Mauricio Domogan last week issued Administrative Order 002, series of 2012 enforcing a simpler method for the processing of business permit renewals at city hall.

"There is an urgent appeal by taxpayers to accelerate the pace of processing business permits," the AO states.

Leaders rally citizens for action to honor Rizal’s martyrdom

City mayor Mauricio Domogan last Friday called on Filipinos to reflect not only on the martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal but on what each has and will do in the exercise of the freedom for which the national hero fought and died.

"I hope that we continue to value our freedom and not take it for granted," he said at the rites marking the 115th anniversary of Rizal's execution by firing squad in the hands of the Spanish colonial government at Bagumbayan, now the Luneta Park in Manila.

City expects to bid out asin hydro project in January

BAGUIO CITY – The city government expects to bid out the operation of the city-owned Asin mini-hydroelectric plants in Tuba, Benguet to qualified private investors this January.

Mayor Mauricio Domogan said the city looks forward to setting the project into motion to finally realize its thrust to maximize the power generating potential of the plants and restore their viability.

Council backs Pinsao road development to decongest city center

BAGUIO CITY – The city council supported Councilor Isabeo Cosalan Jr.'s proposal for the development of a road linking Longlong in Pinsao Proper to Irisan particularly the road that passes through Bowat as a priority project to support the city's thrust to decongest the central business district.

In a proposed resolution which the body approved recently, Cosalan also sought to urge Rep. Bernardo Vergara to allocate funds for the development of said stretch.

Football faces brighter future as expats bring home gear

The late football coach and Gold Ore weekly paper editor Jose "Peppot" Ilagan must be smiling from up there in the great newsroom and playing field in the sky. Things are looking up from down here, at least for three reasons.

First was three of his boys – midfielder Albert Martin, his brother and striker Jimmy and defender and goalie Edward Dait – recently came home with playing shoes, balls, uniforms and socks to prop up those who took over from them chasing dreams at the Burnham Park football grounds.

Terms on led technology okayed

BAGUIO CITY – The city council has approved the terms of reference (TOR) to enter into a light management deal with a qualified company using the Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology.

The venture will involve the replacement of all streetlights, park lights, including lights in overpasses, flyovers and City Government owned buildings and facilities with LED bulbs and repair and the maintenance on a private-public partnership and a cost-saving share scheme.

City joins APIR campaign

BAGUIO CITY – Mayor Mauricio Domogan last week expressed support for the Department of Health's Aksyon: Paputok Injury Reduction (APIR) campaign against using firecrackers in celebrating Christmas and the coming year.

The mayor cautioned the general public, and asked that other ways of merry-making be used to observe the holidays. He asked that Baguio residents be reminded of the first Christmas when only Joseph, Mary, the shepherds and wise men were aware of Christ's birth in Bethlehem.
