BAGUIO CITY, September 16 – The city government got a timely financial boost and an early Christmas present from the Aquino administration following the marching orders of Budget Secretary Florencio "Butch" Abad to release the P125M share of the city from PEZA taxes that was wrongly remitted to the national coffers over a decade ago.

Abad made the directive to his subordinates to process the release of the amount considering that the city urgently needs additional funds to bankroll the implementation of priority calamity projects.

During the continuing budget deliberations in the House of Representatives, Rep. Bernardo M. Vergara raised concerns over the continuous failure of the DBM to release the accumulated PEZA share of the city government that was wrongly remitted to the national treasury by former officials of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) in the Cordillera considering that it was vetoed several times and that it seemed the national government was not interested in giving it to the city.

This was underscored by Mr. Luis A. Lu, Jr., assistant vice president of Protech Machinery Corporation, who added that there were already incidents that indicate some groups and individuals are trying their best to sabotage the operations of the machines so that they will not be able to convert the city's biodegradable wastes into high grade compost fertilizer.

Prior to the collapse of the portion of the Irisan dumpsite retaining wall that caused the highly publicized trash slide, some individuals had already attempted to steal the engine of the ERS machines and that they were also able to remove the belt of the boiler.
