Barangays urged to establish human rights action center

BAGUIO CITY - Barangays here should establish their own human rights action center to empower them to take an active role in the protection and promotion of social justice and human rights.

The city council recently approved Resolution No. 371 series of 2011 authored by Councilors Edison Bilog, Joel Alangsab, Betty Lourdes tabanda and Karminn Cheryl Dinney Yangot for this purpose.

City joins APIR campaign

BAGUIO CITY – Mayor Mauricio Domogan last week expressed support for the Department of Health's Aksyon: Paputok Injury Reduction (APIR) campaign against using firecrackers in celebrating Christmas and the coming year.

The mayor cautioned the general public, and asked that other ways of merry-making be used to observe the holidays. He asked that Baguio residents be reminded of the first Christmas when only Joseph, Mary, the shepherds and wise men were aware of Christ's birth in Bethlehem.

MGD's autonomy plea: "Unity for Executive certification to ensure legis'n."

BAGUIO CITY – "Every action is followed by a fair reaction."

Thus, in essence, declared mayor Mauricio Domogan last week as he called on Cordillera local government units (LGU) to pass necessary resolutions imploring Malacanang to certify the 2011 Organic Act as urgent piece of legislation.

Cordillera solons last week filed HB 5595 in the House of Representatives, pushing for approval of the creation of the Autonomous Region of the Cordilleras.

City eyes redevelopment of mines view park

BAGUIO CITY – The city government plans to redevelop Mines View Park here to restore its glory as a promenade center and tourist destination.

Mayor Mauricio Domogan said they have allocated P4 million in this year's budget for the improvement of the park which he said will begin as soon as the vendors vacate the park's premises and move to the satellite market building constructed by the city government nearby.

Release of fund for dumpsite rehab awaited

BAGUIO CITY – Mayor Mauricio Domogan expressed hopes that the P110 million approved by President Benigno Aquino for the rehabilitation of the collapsed retaining wall at Irisan dumpsite here will be released soon to ensure early implementation of the project.

"Hopefully the national government will release the fund approved in principle early so the project can be expedited and completed hopefully before the onset of the rainy season next year," the mayor said.

Seminar on tourist data reporting done

BAGUIO CITY – Owners and operators of primary, secondary and related tourism enterprises in the city listened as Department of Tourism (DOT) Regional Director Purificacion Molintas and Baguio Country Club General Manager Anthony De Leon discussed salient points of RA 9593 or the New Tourism Law at the City Hall Multi-purpose hall last Wednesday.

Mayor Mauricio Domogan who delivered the welcome remarks expressed appreciation for the audiences' concern for the industry and that such should be sustained.

'Kalikasan' plea: MGD maintains no dumping of waste in Irisan

BAGUIO CITY – In the face of a petition seeking total abandonment and conversion of erstwhile Irisan garbage dumpsite into a green mound, mayor Mauricio Domogan last week maintained the area "is not and will not be the way it used to."

"I believe there is confusion here somewhere," he said adding, "There is no more dumping at Irisan."

Imelda V outperforms other barangays

Imelda Village emerged the city's best performing barangay for the third straight year, this time besting 24 others which qualified for the annual contest sponsored by the city, through the Special Services Division (SSD) of the mayor's office.

For its three-peat, the community led by punong barangay (PB) Arturo Rapelo Jr. won P55,000 cash prize presented during the awards rites last Thursday at the Abada Hall of the Teachers' Camp.

City braces for increased garbage output during holidays

BAGUIO CITY – The city government has prepared contingency plans to address the expected increase in garbage output here with the influx of visitors for the holidays.

Mayor Mauricio Domogan said the city environment and parks management office (CEPMO) under Cordelia Lacsamana will be on hand to tackle this concern even as he appealed to residents and tourists to do their share by minimizing their wastes and sustaining the segregation practice in their homes.

Christmas activities on

BAGUIO CITY – The suspension of the number coding scheme for private vehicles begin this Monday, Dec. 19 until Jan. 2, as Christmas activities peak in the barangays and within the central business district. As to the administrative order issued by Mayor Mauricio Domogan earlier, local tourists and visitors may travel to scenic spots around the city in their vehicles and also join in the slated activities.

Linggo ng Kabataan which started Dec. 12 shall end today, Sunday at Malcolm Square; as with the celebration of foreign group balikbayan at SM.
