Mayor opens city housing to victims of trash slide, releases financial assistance to victims

BAGUIO CITY - Displaced families affected by the trash slide were offered the chance to finally own a house they can call their own.

Mayor Mauricio Domogan announced Wednesday his desire for the families whose houses were damaged to avail of the city housing project at Cypress Village, Irisan here.

The housing project is owned by Asia Pine Hills Development Corporation and has a total land area of 8,204 square meters subdivided into four titled lots.

Attempts to sabotage ERS operations bared

BAGUIO CITY, September 16 – Amidst the consolidated efforts of the city government and Protech Machinery Corporation to perfect the system that will be a permanent solution to the city's garbage disposal problem, some groups and individuals are working on the sidelines to sabotage the operation of the P128 million Environmental Recycling System (ERS) machines in order to divert the blame on the city's garbage problem to the current local officials that will advance their own personal and political interests.

This was underscored by Mr. Luis A. Lu, Jr., assistant vice president of Protech Machinery Corporation, who added that there were already incidents that indicate some groups and individuals are trying their best to sabotage the operations of the machines so that they will not be able to convert the city's biodegradable wastes into high grade compost fertilizer.

Prior to the collapse of the portion of the Irisan dumpsite retaining wall that caused the highly publicized trash slide, some individuals had already attempted to steal the engine of the ERS machines and that they were also able to remove the belt of the boiler.

City issues guidelines on revived no-segregation-no-collection garbage policy

BAGUIO CITY –The city government has issued guidelines for the revived "no segregation, no collection" policy in garbage collection beginning Sept. 12.

Mayor Mauricio Domogan urged residents here to educate themselves and the members their households on the rudiments of waste segregation to enable them to comply with the revitalized garbage separation campaign and contribute to the solution of the city's garbage problem.

At the same time, the mayor lauded the best performing barangays in terms of waste segregation namely Pinsao Proper and Quirino Hill barangays which he said should serve as role models of other barangays.

Small foundation reaches out to ailing toddler

A small foundation established by the only non-German by birth to become a member of Deutchsland's national karate team last Wednesday gave a fresh fighting chance to a Baguio boy barely alive after four relapses in his long-drawn battle against leukemia.

ShoshinKinderhilfe, led by former world traditional karate champion Julian Chees, propped up five-year old Franz Asher Flores with a P10,000 support. It was the latest in a continuous out-reach to seriously ill and indigent patients here for whom the foundation was set up in 2004.

Last Sunday, Shoshin also reached out to the family of Mary Frances Catanes, Chees' elementary school classmate in Lepanto, Mankayan, Benguet. She recently succumbed to cancer at 50.

P125 M PEZA tax share release okayed by DBM

BAGUIO CITY, September 16 – The city government got a timely financial boost and an early Christmas present from the Aquino administration following the marching orders of Budget Secretary Florencio "Butch" Abad to release the P125M share of the city from PEZA taxes that was wrongly remitted to the national coffers over a decade ago.

Abad made the directive to his subordinates to process the release of the amount considering that the city urgently needs additional funds to bankroll the implementation of priority calamity projects.

During the continuing budget deliberations in the House of Representatives, Rep. Bernardo M. Vergara raised concerns over the continuous failure of the DBM to release the accumulated PEZA share of the city government that was wrongly remitted to the national treasury by former officials of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) in the Cordillera considering that it was vetoed several times and that it seemed the national government was not interested in giving it to the city.

5-year old Hannah seemingly jumps for joy with a P10,000 gift from the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Baguio (HRAB) for her continued therapy during her visit at the Baguio Country Club last September 16. HRAB President Anthony De Leon and HRAB Membership Committee Chair Anabelle Ramos personally handed to her grandmother Rita Martin the amount along with goodies.

 

Pro Tech commits to complete hauling

BAGUIO CITY – Pro Tech Machineries Corporation committed to haul out non-biodegradable wastes completely in two weeks' time pending the preparation of a staging area outside of the Irisan controlled dump facility.

City environment and parks management officer CordeliaLacsamana said a memorandum of agreement is being drafted for the staging area being prepared also in Irisan barangay of which among the terms will be that the transport of non-biodegradable wastes to another should be done within 24 hours.

Pro Tech vice-president Luis Lu Jr. also assured the city council last Monday that they will comply with all the terms of their contract with the city particularly on the hauling of non-biodegradable wastes and the purchase of the compost materials generated by the Environmental Recycling System (ERS) machines.
